The notification system is primarily a warning platform as well as somewhere that people can notify the authorities of a bear sighting that the camera system possibly could miss. As for your final question, that was a potential concern of ours but our designs goal is to limit the number of interactions between the humans and bears and to alert the authorities as soon as possible. Our hope is that when the authorities receive this information it will allow them to get to the site of bear before a community member could potentially harm the bear. But with our design, after the detection of a bear that information is sent out through the app to law enforcement first, and then to the people in the surrounding area. So we switched gears and began looking at pressure plate perimeters and laser perimeters to detect the bears and then have a system to scare the bear like spraying ammonia or turning on bright flashing lights. However, then we thought it would be better to not even let the bears enter the neighborhood in the first place. We also looked at using street lights to detect bears so that the community would know anytime a bear was around. We looked at ammonia lined trash cans to overcome the scent of trash, retrofitted trash can locks that would be placed on old trash cans to make it warder for bears to break in and designs along those lines. The main reason bears come into neighborhoods is for food, they smell the trash and want it. At first we were looking at a system to place inside of neighborhoods that would take away the reason why bears wander into the neighborhoods in the first place. In this way the bear would not need to be removed or relocated from its original home.ģ. The cameras would be placed as a perimeter a little bit outside of the neighborhood so that when a bear is detected, the proper authorities would be able to reach the bear and take care of the issue before the bear even entered the community. Our design focuses on reducing the amount of times a bear even enters a community. Then this number was compared to the average perimeter of a mountain town in Colorado.Ģ. Multiply that by 2 to get the total distance between two cameras (317.85 ft). Then take the cosine of that angle (cos(37°)) multiplied by 199 ft to get half the distance between two of the cameras (158.93 ft). First subtract the angle (106°) divided by two (53°)įrom 90° to get the interior angle of the triangle (37°).
Using trigonometry the distance between cameras without blind spots can be calculated, and to be safe a two foot overlap was accounted for. The camera has a horizontal field of view of 106° and a viewable night vision range of 200ft.
